Pre-Draft

Brandon Meriweather

By TOM

Here are some of my Predraft opinions on Meriweather:

Brandon Meriweather- 5-10.6, 190, 4.5 FS/CB Miami

My Player Ratings:

Attitude is in question. Can play Corner, and is great in coverage. I am sure he will be a terrific Free Safety, but is not a great tackler. Is not a physical hitter, and does not play strong. Did a pathetic 11 reps at 225 pounds.

NFL.com: "A full-time starter his last two seasons, he would go on to register 182 solo tackles, breaking the school career record for safeties that was set by College Hall of Fame selection Bennie Blades (155, 1984-87)."

Meriweather had a 9-foot broad jump and 11 bench presses. He ran the short shuttle in 4.42 seconds and the long shuttle in 11.84.

Campus: 4.52 in the 40-yard dash … 275-pound bench press … Bench pressed 225 pounds 11 times … 385-pound squat … 255-pound power clean … 4.42 20-yard shuttle … 11.84 60-yard shuttle … 9-foot broad jump.

Combine: 4.56 in the 40-yard dash … 1.64 10-yard dash … 2.68 20-yard dash … 4.33 20-yard shuttle … 7.06 three-cone drill … 35-inch vertical jump … 9-3 broad jump … Bench pressed 225 pounds 11 times.

My March Mock Draft:

Brandon Meriweather is another tempting choice here. He has been labeled as having character issues, but I am not sure I buy that. He has never been arrested or got in any trouble while at the U. He was credited with starting the embarrassing brawl against Florida International, but there was a lot of blame to pass around there, and I am not sure you can judge a man's character solely by one act of pure stupidity. On the field he may be as good as any Safety in this draft not named Landry. He can lock onto the TE and shut and him down in coverage. He has that Rodney Harrison knack for  being in the right place at the right time with amazing consistency. What he lacks in size he makes up in toughness. He will never be a devastating hitter like Harrison, but he knows his assignments and carries them out with precision and consistency, which is imperative in the Patriots scheme.

I had Meriweather slipping into the Second Round, pick 43 to the Panthers:

The Player: Merriweather will fall into the Second Round. He has character concerns that will worry teams in the new NFL. However, he is great in coverage, but weak in run support.
