A New Season.
By Tom Mahoney
4. RUN FOREST! RUN- The best news for a young QB is two
things: Defense and Run Game. Mac Jones looked like a plug and play
Champion (by the way I had that pick). However, everything just changed.
The Defenses he faced all Preseason, are the Defenses he will be play against
today. When the Dolphins-D lines-up, they will not be in the same look as
they will be after the Snap. Jones will be facing scheme disguise like he
never saw on Halloween.
“We're always trying to disguise and create a situation
where it's not easy for the quarterback. I think that's always part of the
game plan. That player has the ball in his hands on every snap, so if you
can disrupt that player, then you have a good chance of creating disruptive
plays. I think we're always trying to have an effect on the quarterback: rookie,
veteran. I think that's where it starts, I would say just at least from a
pass game standpoint,” Brian Flores said. “But they've got a very good run
game. I think we're a little bit of 'Mac-Jones Mac-Jones Mac-Jones!' He's a
good player, but they've got a lot of good players on that offense and
defense and kicking game. So I think for us, we're playing the Patriots.
They've got a good offensive line. They've got good tight ends. They've got
good receivers and I think there's a lot to handle there. If we just put
our emphasis on affecting the quarterback, then they'll probably get us
somewhere else. So there's a lot here.”
Jones is going to need his tennis skills to move in the pocket.
They are going to be coming for him at all angles. They will blitze everyone
and anyone from every and any angle, until the Rookie QB throws up from
dizziness. It won’t be... 'Mac-Jones Mac-Jones Mac-Jones' after the game.
It’ll be ‘Rookie-Rookie-Rookie’ after the game. All that work in Preseason
was really just learning the Pats Offense. It was learning how to play QB
in the NFL. It wasn’t about learning and reading NFL Defenses. That
impactful learning starts now, with a crash a bang, and Sack or ten.
"Look, if he's earned the respect of Bill Belichick and
Josh McDaniels? Then he has my respect. He was a very good college player.
He did a lot of great things there," Miami HC Brian Flores said. "I
think one other thing I would say is this is not the Dolphins against Mac
Jones. It's the Dolphins against the Patriots and they've got a good team.
They've got good coaches. They've got a lot of good players. But specific
to Mac Jones, I think he's a good, young talent and we'll have our hands
He is as smart as they come. I think he has Brady’s
intelligence. He has a different competitive spirit as Brady, but we’ll see
if it’s effective.
"I just think for us, there's no film of him. I once
had a coach say, 'prepare for war in a time of peace.' I think sometimes
you look at it and you're like, 'Oh there's a rookie quarterback, we'll be
alright,' and you have no idea what this rookie quarterback is going to go
out there and do Week One of the season,” Jason McCourty said. “You better
make sure you're dotting all of your I's, crossing all your T's and
disregard Bill Belichick. Just the fact that he's a rookie quarterback and
he's stepping into the NFL, you know he's prepared for the moment or he
wouldn't be out there. I think for us – especially when there was a veteran
in front of him so you know he's going to be prepared, he's going to be
ready to go and we have to make sure we are doing the same."
5. Defense Wins
Championships- This game is going
to be won the defensive side of the ball. And the best news, is that the
Patriots have a great veteran Defense. With some terrific young talents
like Barmore and Ronnie “Friggin’” Perkins
thrown in. Did you see his bend in the past Preseason game! “Holy-Moly
Batman, that was something to see!” The Pats Defense got better and better
all Preseason. They blended in enough of the young guys to improve their Defense
significantly. Cameron McGrone and Joshuah Bledsoe made the team on the
Reserve List. Both players could make the team in he future on Special
“They've got some very good
players at the tight end position (a little odd, but okay;),” Brian Flores said
about the young players they picked. “They Defensively, I think they'll
have a significant impact. I think they are good players. are guys that could potentially be
featured on both sides of the ball and the kicking game as well. They
complement a lot of the players they already have on the team. They fit
what Bill and his staff are trying to do. I think they are good additions.
It will be a competitive game. They've got a good team. They are well
coached. We're going to have to prepare the right way and execute the right
way if we're going to have success.”
The Pats also played a flat
defense scheme this Preseason. Now, Tua will be seeing the real Defense,
with Duggar, Hightower, and McCourty on the field for every snap. Barmore,
like I said in The
Grooviest Draft Review Ever LOL,
he was the best inside rusher in this Draft. He flashed that money making
talent this Preseason. Matt Judon looked like a Pro Bowler this Preseason. JC
Jackson looked ready to take that step up to Veteran. Adrian Phillips is my
guy, and the best run stuffer in the Secondary. Van Noy is the most versatile
guy on the Defense. Henry Anderson, Godchaux, and Wise had some flashes as
well. Defense wins Championships, especially with a Rookie or 2nd Year QB
at the helm.
“Well they did a good job
against us last year. They're a well-balanced offense. They like to run the
ball. They have few different ways of doing it and do a good job of
spreading the ball around to their receivers, tight ends, running backs.
Quarterback is mobile, so they're pretty well-balanced,” Belichick said about
the Dolphin Offense. “Coach [George] Godsey is a new play caller down there
taking over for Coach [Chan] Gailey, so we'll see what all that brings.
They're a well-balanced offense and can attack you in a lot of different
fronts. They have big receivers. They have [Jaylen] Waddle. Big addition
for them. They have some other explosive players in the receiver unit.
[Mike] Gesicki is a problem. Backs have a good skillset. Young offensive
line. I think they'll just continue to get better because they have a lot
of youth on their offense, and I'm sure as they grow they'll continue to
improve as a unit.”
As for Stephon Gilmore, the
Defense won’t be whole without him. So just give him a damn Veteran Bonus
and let’s move on to winning some games. He is still currently on the PUP.
Pound for Pounds he’s the best player on the Pats Defense, and with Brady
gone? He’s the best damn player on the Team. With a rookie QB, the Pats
don’t have to worry about the Salary Cap for another 3 to 5 years.
“I know that Steph’s been
working extremely hard, I see him in here all the time,” BB
said. “He’s doing other things while we’re practicing, so we don’t
really see him on the practice field. But he’s been doing everything he can
do. I’d say it’s day-to-day. … And when he’s ready to be out there, then
he’ll be out there.”
6. The Run Game
Factor- The Pats have to, not
just establish the run game, but pound the Dolphins’ D into submission. The
Pats have four RBs that made the Roster. Two big guys and two little guys. They
are going to be relying on their two Big Guys in this Game, Damien Harris
and Rhamondre Stevenson, to pound the ground in Foxboro. James White will be
in on Passing down. This is not the game for JJ Taylor, who didn’t show
well in blitz picked. The O-line will win or lose this Game, with a Rookie
at QB, yikes! So they need to ride O-line to victory at Home.
“I don't think that'll
ever happen as long as I'm here. You don't know how it's going to turn out
and if we'd done that last year and started at some point and left Mike
Onwenu behind because Shaq [Mason] and Joe [Thuney] and David [Andrews]
were already here, I don't think that would've been good for our football
team or fair either,” Belichicks said. “So, I guess you could do it that
way, but I would never do it like that though. I think you build the
foundation and let the players compete and let them play. And then at some
point, make whatever decisions you need to make based on the position and
the role and so forth, and then try to improve from there.”
When the RB aren’t pounding
the Defense, the Dolphins D is going to be looking to pound Mac Jones into
the ground. So don’t expect to see him throw a lot, especially deep. They’ll
have him throw some quick hitters to start. And run-run-run the ball. But the
more they put on his shoulders in the passing game, the worse it is going
to look. He has not seen PrimeTime yet. And as great as he was in the
Preseason, all the Defense change in Week One in the NFL. He will be
learning some serious lesson today.
“I think since Coach
Flores has been down there [in Miami], they have pressured quite a bit on
defense. We've played them four times, and we've seen quite a bit of what
they do,” BB said. “I wouldn't say that they have shown a lot of drastic
changes in preseason. A few things that I'd say are a little bit different
for them, but overall, it's still pretty much what it is. They have good
corners, and they don't mind pressuring the line of scrimmage and letting
those guys do their thing. They've been pretty productive doing it, so I'm
sure we'll see both.”
The Pats O-line better get
ready, because this game will be all trench warfare if the pats want to
7. Well If You Don’t
Know How To Do It, I’ll Show How To Walk Your Dog- Pats Win at Home (but not in Miami). Sorry, I gotta go
walk the Dog before the game!
